[Rob] glitch();

A workshop conducted to explore deliberate destruction, with subject to establishing a ‘new’, unconventional manufacture of beauty/ reality.

Achieved through implicating destructive code upon an image subject, specific bytes of data were corrupted, provoking intentional distortion. The outcomes of this technique provide a graphic with connotations that reflect a ‘glitch’ effect. When montaged together in an animatic sense, a new perception is created, altering meaning through the way in which the image is interpreted upon viewing. This cinematic transition, or even still image effect, disrupts clarity, compelling interest for the viewer/audience as they attempt to make sense of the corrupted visual.

Other images are the outcomes of subjecting this visual to the destructive program.

Working with code provides the potential to build a personal tool, breaking out from the limitations of the market and features of various software. This allows for the creation of a completely original and unique outcome beyond that of the capabilities of software tools and effects.

Digital imagery is constructed of bytes, this being a measurement of data units, made up of binary code. These codes can be edited and manipulated to make changes to the visual information of a specific image. This effect can be seen in my outcomes above.

After the workshop, I montaged my visual outcomes together to visualise the glitch in action. This produced heightened drama with direct regard to the effect discussed above. In a sense, manufacturing a moving, motion-based edition brought the glitch to life, greater compelling the interest of any audience.
