Type Construction, A-Z & Reference

The purpose of this workshop was to develop an ability to utilise shapes and stylistic features and implement such into an outcome of a typographic purpose. Reference images were provided for such inspiration, where I was immediately drawn towards the following works of Wolfgang Weingart and El Lissitzky. See below.

In specific, the feature of block colour, dramatic shape, and the use of saturated colours particularly appealed to me, hopeful to achieve a similar striking effect within my personal workshop outcomes. The strong contrast between black and white induces balance and depth, organising the space into a structured composition.

My Outcomes

Pictured above are the outcomes of this particular task, where I experimented with approach, methodology, as well as compositional alterations. Overall, I am satisfied with the result, recognising upon review that opposing strategies induce varying effect. Reflecting specifically, I like the third design most, as this appears to withhold the most effective compositional stance, applying a minimalistic and modern, yet bold aesthetic.

Using the stylistic format of my favourite typographic outcome, I then created the following A-Z typeface documented above.

Inspired by Bauhaus and Josef Muller-Brockmann, a desire for minimalism and simplicity became apparent, resulting in well compositionally crafted characters, with an ease of legibility for any audience to read and interpret content.

Bauhaus’s specific circular design, and those of Josef Muller-Brockmann, which provided primary inspiration are embedded below.

My final outcomes for this workshop- I reconstructed the designers names in my typeface. I sustained a monochromatic theme of high contrast to relate directly to their style of Swiss minimalism, also provoking boldness and a striking nature aesthetically.
